Impacts of COVID-19 on Motor Vehicle Crash Frequency and Severity by Functional Classification and Land Use Context

Reduced traffic exposure due to COVID-19 lockdowns may have resulted in changes both the frequency and severity of motor vehicle crashes. In order better understand impact on safety outcomes US DOT Region 6, we explored role vehicle, user, built environment factors fatalities, injuries, total crashes before during Oklahoma Texas. Findings suggest that while crash counts 6 were 45%-50% lower than previous five-year averages, more severe. Fatal pedestrian decreased 3.9% fatal bicyclist increased 22.0%. These worse as a whole. likely single-vehicle fixed-object or rollover involving unsafe speeds. Texas, suburban areas saw most COVID-19. Rural Texas result serious injury, likelihood got lockdowns.
